Horizon Line provides line editing, copyediting, and proofreading for manuscripts and communications collateral. We also specialize in script coverage and developmental coverage for fiction.
Horizon Line believes editors are reader advocates. Our goal is to improve and polish writing to communicate most effectively with a writer's reader.
It depends. The cost of our services depends on the type of document (manuscript, journal article, newsletter article, corporate correspondence, script, etc.) and the level of editing required. We offer competitive pricing aligned with rates published by the Editorial Freelancers' Association. A quote is provided after reviewing the document (or an excerpt) and learning more about each project's needs.
The turnaround time depends on the length and complexity of the document or manuscript, but we strive to provide a quick and efficient service. Turnaround time is also affected by editor availability and the seasonal workload. Time estimates are included in the scope of work.
Our view is that charging by word count doesn't fully respect a client's needs. Light editing should cost fewer dollars than heavy editing. An existing well-polished, structurally sound work simply needs less interference and less reader advocacy. Our hourly rate aims to reflect that philosophy.
One hour is the minimum fee. Time billed above one hour will be in twenty minute increments. Fees billed will not exceed the contracted agreement as long as the project does not extend past the original scope of work. Tasks beyond the original scope of work will be negotiated and billed accordingly.
A small degree of fact-checking is assumed during the copyediting process (spelling of proper nouns, dates, etc.). Thorough research and fact-checking is not offered at this time. However, Brooke Borel's The Chicago Guide to Fact-Checking is recommended as a wonderful resource for every writer.
Engaging an editorial service does not guarantee publication, agent acquisition, sales, winnings, employment, or admissions.
A thoughtful, well-crafted essay will certainly improve your student's chances of gaining admission to any institution of higher learning, but admission is not guaranteed because a student or representative engages an editorial service.
All forms and genres of writing are considered for editorial services. The editor has experience editing across genres, but she most enjoys editing fiction, literary fiction, creative nonfiction, memoir, scripts, and scholarly journal articles
